NOTICES for SUNDAY 5 MAY 2024
EASTER VI

This page was updated on Saturday 4 May

May – Month of Our Lady
May is traditionally a month of devotion to Our Lady.  At end of 10.30am Mass each Sunday, we will process to the Lady Chapel and sing a Marian motet.  You are invited to visit the Lady Chapel during the month and to leave flowers – we will make sure they are put in water.

Justice & Peace Group Fairtrade Stall
The Fairtrade stall will be open after Masses today.

Ascension Day
Thursday this week is Ascension Day, a holyday of obligation.  There are Masses at 8am, 12.30pm and 7pm.  And a Vigil Mass (in Latin) at 7pm on Wednesday.

First Sunday Circle: Divine Grace and Human Free Will
Today, after the evening Mass, Fr Matthew Jarvis op joins us for First Sunday Circle – an opportunity for young adults (18-35) to hear about matters of Catholic faith and life in a relaxed social setting with opportunity for discussion.  Fr Jarvis will speak on Divine Grace and Human Free Will.  The arguments between Dominicans and Jesuits on this topic in the 16-17th centuries are among the greatest theological controversies of all time.  The Pope called an end to hostilities in 1607, insisting that each side could continue teaching their own view as long as they didn’t call the other side heretical!  How do we understand today the relationship of God’s grace and our free will in the light of Scripture, the Church Fathers and later Tradition?  All welcome, especially heretics.

Latin Mass
Each month, we celebrate a Mass in Latin for those who find this conducive to their prayer and worship.  The whole Mass is in Latin except for the readings which are in English.  The Latin texts and translations are provided.  The Mass includes some Gregorian chant.  Our next Latin Mass will be this Wednesday at 7pm – the Vigil of the feast of the Ascension of the Lord, a holiday of obligation.  All welcome.

Classical Guitar Recital
Classical guitarists Ahmed Dickinson and Eduardo Martin will be performing a recital in the church today, Sunday 5 May, at 4pm.  A recent review comments, ‘You are left with the sensation of being touched to the core by exquisitely played pieces.’  All welcome.  Tickets £13 online at Citizen Ticket or on the door.

Christian Life Community (CLC)
The first of our new CLC groups meets this week on Tuesday (becoming the Tuesday CLC Group meeting on the first Tuesday of each month).  If you expressed an interest a while back and Tuesday suits, please come along to the Ogilvie Room (access through the church) at 7pm.  There will also be a Monday Group which begins on Monday 20 May at 7pm.  CLC is an opportunity for prayer, reflection on scripture, and sharing of our Christian faith and life.  Sessions last one hour.  If you did not come to the information meetings and wish to find out more, please email ejc@jesuit.org.uk

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The journey to becoming Catholic, either through baptism or reception into the Catholic Church at Easter, begins again on Wednesday 22 May at 7pm.  Our new course this past year has proved popular and appreciated and we are making an adjustment for 2024-25 so that people who have already expressed an interest will meet monthly from May until August, ahead of the programme proper starting in September.  If you are interested, or know someone who is, or if you would like to volunteer to help with RCIA, please contact Andrew Cassidy (Parish Pastoral Associate) at ejcpastoral@jesuit.org.uk

Parish Synod Weekend
There will be a weekend of events around our patronal feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday 7 to Sunday 9 June 2024) offering the opportunity to pick up again the themes of the Synod and especially those priorities for development identified at our own Synod meetings in January 2022.  It will also be a celebration of the activities of this Catholic community and an opportunity to get to know each other better and to share our faith in different ways.  We will be joined by Archbishop Leo Cushley for the Saturday morning.  Please make a note in your diary and keep the weekend free.
